Yes, we know it's not pie, and for that matter, mac-and-cheese is not a vegetable, but we're Southerners and we like to keep friends close.

SINCE 1939

  1. 1939

Lynn Chandler, 23 years old, buys the soda fountain of Elliston Pharmacy. A chocolate soda costs a nickel.

  2. The Rock Block years

The block fills with music clubs — the Exit/In opens down the street — and the soda shop feeds all of them.

  3. 2019

After 80 years, the shop announces it will close. Nashville says no.

  4. 2021

Tony and Lisa Giarratana reopen it two doors down, twice the room, restored to its 1930s self — Wurlitzer, red stools and all. The longest-running restaurant in Nashville keeps running.
